How to Mark a Football Pitch | Step-by-Step Guide Ireland

Whether you're marking a community football pitch for the first time or refreshing lines at the start of the season, this guide walks you through the full process — from measuring out to applying the final line.

What You Need

Football Pitch Dimensions

Standard adult football pitch dimensions (FIFA guidelines):

  • Length: 100–110 metres (touch lines)
  • Width: 64–75 metres (goal lines)
  • Centre circle: 9.15 metre radius
  • Penalty area: 40.32m wide x 16.5m deep
  • Goal area: 18.32m wide x 5.5m deep
  • Penalty spot: 11 metres from goal line
  • Corner arc: 1 metre radius

Step-by-Step Guide to Marking a Football Pitch

Step 1 — Prepare your paint

Mix your concentrate paint before filling your machine:

  • Clubline White: 2.5L paint + 4L water per pitch
  • Lumen White: 2L paint + 4.5L water per pitch
  • Extreme White: 1.5L paint + 5L water per pitch

Ready-to-use paints (Edge, Direct) go straight from container into machine — no mixing required.

Step 2 — Set out the corner pegs

Establish the four corner positions of the pitch using a measuring tape and pegs. Drive a peg into the ground at each corner. Measure the diagonal from corner to corner to confirm the pitch is square — both diagonals must be identical.

Step 3 — Mark the touchlines and goal lines

Run a string line between each pair of corner pegs to define the touchlines and goal lines. This gives you the full pitch outline. Mark these four boundary lines first before moving to interior markings.

Step 4 — Find and mark the halfway line

Measure the exact midpoint of both touchlines and run a string line across the full width of the pitch to mark the halfway line.

Step 5 — Mark the centre circle

Find the centre spot at the intersection of the halfway line and the pitch's lengthwise midpoint. Mark the centre spot, then use a string line of 9.15 metres radius to mark the centre circle. Walk around the centre spot with the string taut and mark the arc with spray chalk or paint.

Step 6 — Mark the penalty areas

At each end, measure 16.5 metres from the goal line towards the centre of the pitch. Measure 40.32 metres across centred on the goal (20.16m from centre on each side) and mark the penalty area rectangle.

Step 7 — Mark the goal areas

Inside each penalty area, measure 5.5 metres from the goal line and 18.32 metres across (9.16m from centre on each side) to mark the smaller goal area.

Step 8 — Mark the penalty spots

Measure 11 metres from the centre of each goal line directly towards the centre of the pitch and mark the penalty spot.

Step 9 — Mark the penalty arc

Using the penalty spot as the centre, draw an arc of 9.15 metre radius outside the penalty area — this is the D-shaped arc visible at the top of each penalty box.

Step 10 — Mark the corner arcs

At each corner of the pitch, mark a quarter-circle arc of 1 metre radius inside the pitch from the corner flag position.

Step 11 — Apply the paint

Follow all string lines with your spray marker or transfer wheel machine. Maintain a consistent speed and height for even line width. Use a Green Flat Fan Nozzle (F110-015) for Clubline or Lumen. Use a Yellow Flat Fan Nozzle (F110-020) for Extreme.

Step 12 — Remove string lines and inspect

Remove all string lines and pegs. Walk the full pitch and touch up any missed sections or gaps.

Tips for Professional Football Pitch Marking

  • Always check squareness diagonally before marking — a square pitch is the foundation of accurate line marking
  • Mark in dry conditions where possible for better paint adhesion and durability
  • For 7v7 or 9v9 SSG pitches within a full-size pitch, use Clubline Blue — the FAI recommended blue for SSG lines on white-lined pitches
  • For robotic marking, use Edge paint with a Turf Tank or similar robotic system
